Questions and answers related to health, nutrition and sweets:
- How much sugar do Nidar’s products contain?
- The sugar content varies from product to product. Chocolate contains around 40% sugar and other carbohydrates, while the carbohydrate content in a product such as Laban is around 70%. Extra chewing gum is sugar free.
- Has Nidar any recommendations as to the maximum amount of sweets we should consume?
- How many sweets you should consume depends on your diet. A person, who otherwise eats little sugar, can eat more sweets than a person who has a diet rich in sugar. It also depends on how physically active you are. The intake of calories should not exceed what you metabolism burns; otherwise there is a high risk of weight gain.
- Has Nidar a responsibility for the problems of increased obesity in the population?
- More obesity in the population is due to the fact that we are less active. In the last fifteen years we have, on average, become about five kilos heavier, while the consumption of sweets has been approximately stable. For Nidar, it is important to communicate that sweets should not replace ordinary food. Sweets are for moments of pleasure.
Nidar is, however, responsible for providing good information about what our products contain. Therefore, we have prepared and issued nutritional declarations on all our products on our Norwegian internet site and are in the process of introducing nutritional declarations on the wrappings of all our products. We are also looking at the possibility of developing new products with, for example, lower sugar content.
- Isn't it easier to get people to cut down on the intake of sweets and other unhealthy food, than to make people exercise more?
- We cannot give up on trying to get people to exercise more. A healthy life style consists of more than weight control. You cannot improve your general fitness by eating less chocolate. Treating yourself is also important to good health. Sweets are an important pleasure to a lot of people. When a dish of chocolates and/or other sweets is on the table, we feel good.
